In every drop of water, there are hundreds even thousands of tiny little pebbles. These pebbles wreak havoc on your indoor plumbing, your toilets, your faucets and more. They tear up your clothes every time you wash them. They build up on your tub walls, on your sinks and inside the guts of your toilets.

In the biz, we call these little granules “hardness” and if you use water, you have a hardness problem.

Where the hardness comes from – the water cycle

Think about it. Water is a “renewable resource”. The water we use today has been with us for millions of years. The water we drink today was cloud vapor weeks ago.

As water falls from the sky, it travels over and enters the ground. As it passes through the various layers of rock it absorbs calcium and magnesium. These minerals “harden” the water as it finds its way into larger bodies of water and eventually into our homes.

What is soap scum anyway?

Many families don’t even realize they have hard water. Probably the most common symptoms of hard water are soap scum in the tub and shower walls as well as spots on faucets and fixtures.

Soap scum is created when the minerals in the water (the hardness) react with soaps and detergents to form an insoluble, sticky residue that’s almost impossible to rinse from bathtubs, sinks, faucets and fixtures.

This same residue is left on hair, skin and clothes too. You can’t see the gross stuff like you can on your tub walls, but it shows itself in dry, itchy skin and dull looking laundry.

You’re already paying for a softener, whether you own one or not

Grab your closest container of laundry detergent. Go ahead, I’ll wait. Take a look at the ingredients. One of the first few on the list will be “Water Softeners” or “Buffering Agents”. You see, when you purchase one of those big, giant jugs of laundry detergent more than half of what you are buying is a chemical softener.

See, the Proctors and the Gambles know what it takes to deliver clean clothes. They also know that most people have no idea how hard their water really is. So they supplement the soap with surfactants and other chemicals that isolate the hardness molecules and allow the soap to do it’s job.

By removing the hardness in your water, you can significantly reduce the amount of soaps and detergents you use (not to mention shampoos, lotions and creams). Plus, you can buy soaps that are pure soap and that saves you money.

How does a softener work?

Simply put, a water softener “exchanges” the hardness molecules for a different, inert molecule like sodium or potassium. When your water enters the water softener, it comes in contact with a bed of very, very tiny beads. These beads “hold” the inert sodium or potassium molecules. These beads, though, have a natural attraction to the hardness molecules of calcium and magnesium.

As the water passes through the beads (also called resin), the beads are more attracted to the hardness molecules than to the sodium or potassium molecules they are already holding onto. So they let go of these molecules and grab onto the hardness molecules effectively removing all of the hardness from the water.

Eventually, the beads are holding onto so many hardness molecules that it is “exhausted” and it can’t grab any more. The system automatically “regenerates” these worn-out beads by rinsing them off with a solution that strips the hardness molecules from their surfaces. Once that’s done, the whole cycle starts again.

But I have city water

City water is a good start, but it’s still hard. See, municipal water utilities are regulated by the EPA. On a regular basis, the water must be tested for a bunch of different contaminants to make sure they are within acceptable levels. Acceptable basically means you won’t get sick or die if you drink it, but it is hardly the best for your health and your home.

Scummy shower walls, spots on your dishes and drab laundry are all great reasons to have a water analysis test done of your home’s tap water. We’ll send one of our water experts to your house with a kit full of all the tools, meters and vials he needs to tell you exactly what’s in your water. Once he is through, you’ll also know what you can do about it because hard water causes lots of other problems in your house too.

The ‘Worn’ Look

Look, I know that it’s fashionable to wear jeans that look like they’ve been through war and back. That’s fine for a $30 pair of jeans. But when you spend $70 or $80 on a nice blouse you want it to look it’s best for a long time. Unfortunately, clothes start to look old. Often after just a few washings! And I’d like you to know why.

Remember the little boulders or granules in the water? Well, when you wash your clothes those little granules get tossed around the machine and bash the stuffing out of your clothing’s fibers. The proof of this beating is found in a place you’d probably never think of.

Your Dryer’s Lint Trap

The key to a long life for your dryer is keeping the lint trap clean. Keeping a clean lint trap will likely yield other benefits like faster-drying clothes and sometimes some loose change. Have you ever pondered, however, what exactly the dryer lint is and where it comes from?

Bad news. It’s your favorite outfit

Ok, maybe it’s not just one outfit. Remember how hard water beats up your clothes every time you wash them? Well, when those clothes are dried, the teeny tiny threads that are ripped off of your laundry swirl and swirl around the clothes dryer. Since they are very small (some you can’t even see with the naked eye), they get drawn into the dryer’s exhaust and end up in the lint trap. Over time, your laundry ends up getting more and more worn out and ultimately winds up as plain old lint. Softened water helps reduce the damage your clothes endure so you can wear them longer.

More Hardness Problems

Your plumbing takes a wallop too. If you’ve ever noticed the crusty scale at the base of your fixtures or around your toilet rim you know what I’m talking about. It’s hardness. And all those deposits are what lead to plumbing breakdowns. Problems like leaky faucets, crusty valves, running toilets and more could be avoided, were it not for hard water.

There are lots of other plumbing problems caused by hard water. Water heater tanks fail prematurely. Humidifiers are impossible to maintain. Showerheads spray erratically. All these things give most homeowners plenty of headaches. But the worst part is that it costs you more than it should.

Your water heater has to work very hard to give you hot water when you need it. It needs to raise the water temperature by 100 degrees and keep it there until you need it. Hard water makes this job harder. A study conducted by New Mexico State University found that water heaters work 22 to 30 percent less efficiently with hard water. That’s because the lining of your tank becomes coated with the same scale that you see around your faucets and inside your humidifier. The more scale there is, the harder it is for your water heater to heat.

Run water heater, run!

Your water heater is not only more costly to run; you’ll need to replace it more often. When scale builds up in your tank, it reduces the amount of heat that is transferred to your water. Instead, the tank itself is overheated (thanks to the insulating layer of the scaled hardness) and is overly stressed making your tank’s life span shorter and shorter.

No, you won’t learn any of this from any run-of-the-mill plumber. You certainly won’t learn it in the isles of Lowes or Home Depot. These are retail businesses that would rather you replace your various fixtures frequently. We have a better idea. We’re so confident that a Kinetico Softener will improve the quality of your water that we’re willing to guarantee every plumbing appliance in your home.

Imagine never needing to buy another toilet, faucet or water heater for as long as you live in your house. Once your new softener is doing its job, we’ll cover every single plumbing fixture we install from that moment on for life.

How can we make such a generous offer?

It’s easy, really. We’ve teamed up with Kinetico, manufacturer of the finest water treatment equipment on the market. Using their exclusive non-electric systems, our customers enjoy soft, treated water around the clock. In fact, we like Kinetico products enough to offer a full 7-Year Extended Warranty.

There’s plenty of reasons you should have a Kinetico system in your house. We want to make it even easier for you. If you call today, we’ll send one of our water experts to your house to do a full water evaluation for free.

According to a study from Ohio State University, the average homeowner spends more than six hours per month cleaning all of the spots, streaks and scum created by hard water. That’s three days a year! Unless cleaning is high on your list of fun things to do, you can probably come up with lots of good reasons not to spend so much time cleaning.

Take a minute and call Runnemede at (856) 939-4299. We’ll send one of our professional water experts to your home for free. He’ll have of all the tools, meters and vials he needs to tell you exactly what’s in your water. He’ll show you the damage hard water is doing to your home. And he’ll show you what a Kinetico softener can do about it. Call today.
